Leaving Footprints: hearing the sounds of home – led by Jenni Schine and Cat Main

As we walk through familiar places, we inscribe our own stories onto the routes that we make. What do these everyday places sound like? Come explore the personal and public sounds of our neighbourhood’s domestic soundscape. Hear the sounds of home. Leave your footprints. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing for an hour-long walk.

This soundwalk will feature performance by Meredith Bates (Pugs and Crows), Tegan Ceschi-Smith, Christie-Rose Jorg, and Brady Marks.

A Soundwalk is a silent group walk led along a planned route to experience a location’s ambiance and underlying rhythms. All too often the sounds of the environment pass by unnoticed because of our uncanny ability to shut them out. A Soundwalk enables its participants to actively listen, opening ears and consciousness to the complex orchestration that the environment is composing at all times. It is a musical-sonic adventure that reveals the banal to be extraordinary!

Sun, 15 April, 14:00 – 15:00
Where: Commercial Drive and East 14th Avenue. (map)
NOTE: This walk is now full; please email footprints@newmusic.org to reserve a spot on the wait-list.
DON’T MISS YOUR OPPORTUNITY FOR THE NEXT SOUNDWALK, April 22nd

The Sounds of Sustainability – led by Tyler Kinnear
Sunday, April 22, 2012 | 2PM
Meeting point: main entrance to the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability. [map]

Coinciding with Earth Day, this soundwalk invites participants to open their ears to “green” spaces on the campus of UBC, including the recently constructed Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability.  Marked as a “living laboratory” and the “greenest” building in North America, what does the Centre communicate acoustically?  In addition to indoor spaces, listeners will explore forested paths and concrete canyons.

Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes, as the walk will take place rain or shine.
